Name: Karen Etingin
Website: www.laffichiste.com
Karen Etingin was born and raised in Montreal, and educated at Tufts University in Boston where she graduated with honors with a degree in International Relations. In New York, Karen worked as an advertising executive (for powerhouse fashion icons Oscar de la Renta, Perry Ellis and Valentino while at Parfums Stern), as a US market strategist (for various Canadian retailers who were expanding into the American market), and finally as a high-end professional and corporate caterer (after completing classes at Peter Kump’s famed New York Cooking School).
After returning to Montreal, Karen continued to run both the New York and Canadian offices of Mangetout, her catering business. At one point the company was producing meals for private, corporate and (private) jet clients, employed roughly 50 free-lance waiters, waitresses and chefs, and coordinated events like country weddings, intimate dinner parties, corporate lunches and anything in between.
After having a child, Karen sold her catering business to her chef and returned to the field of marketing and public relations. Specializing in high fashion and high tech, and using her multi-lingual skills, she helped sell everything from $1000 handbags to multi-million dollar flight simulators. Karen continues to consult and enjoys writing and translating (from Italian and/or French to English) advertising and marketing copy and press documents - language is one of her passions.
Currently the owner of Montreal’s only vintage poster gallery (www.laffichiste.com), Karen gives courses on the social and political impact and importance of posters - particularly from the Belle Epoque through Art Deco periods. Her lifestyle and pofessional writing has been published both on and off line (in magazines as varied as Aviation Week and Space Technology to Montreal Magazine), and she is currently writing a book. Karen lives in Montreal with her son and their two Labrador Retrievers, Percy and Molly.
